Re:Mix
Posted in: UncategorizedIt’s seems like every time I turn the TV on my childhood is being re-marketed and re-purposed, but it always seems to be lacking the heart of the originals.
It started with Star Wars making it back onto the big screen, an event which I think we can all agree was a let down, at best. The downward spiral continued by bringing back an aged, albeit convincing, Harrison Ford in the iconic role of archaeologist/adventurer Dr. Henry Jones, which was great. But was then ruined by throwing him into a world of bad CGI and… aliens? Honestly I think the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, a la Disney World, is better than that entire movie but that’s something else entirely. There was a blip of hope in the Transformers movie but now it’s being turned into a sequel, which I can’t understand since Megatron no longer exists.
Now it seems that one of the most iconic of the television series which I grew up watching is being turned into a movie. On August 7 we welcome “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” into movie theaters across the country; suffice to say I’m not holding my breath.
But before I write everything off I suppose there were a few success stories in the last few years. Batman finally shed his Adam West/George Clooney heritage and became the superhero we all wanted him to be. Spiderman came back in a big way (not Spiderman 3) and I’m finally comfortable with Mr. Jackman wearing the mantle of Wolverine, I even like it.
Then I stumbled across this jewel the other day. It’s true that I’m not looking forward to the cinematic release of the Joe franchise, but the buzz around the movie took my attention off the remake of the cartoon. Yes, the remake of the cartoon! It’s everything you(I) ever wanted in the show; there’s also a showdown between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, need I say more?
G.I. Joe truly is the real American hero.
